Seed Project Makes Plans

Seed, a community arts/creative place-keeping initiative, will begin activations in southeast Lancaster city around the arts in February. Seed's mission is to foster a process of building relationships, connections, and mutual support in southeast Lancaster city in hopes that neighborhood-centered artworks, creative projects, and collaborations emerge as a result.

Founded in 2020 through a Creative Communities Grant awarded to the Spanish American Civic Association (SACA) by the Pennsylvania Council of the Arts (PCA), this five-year project was originally developed as a way to bring the community together around the arts and find creative expressions that neighbors would participate in together, face-to-face. The COVID-19 pandemic has made some of these plans impossible and caused others to be reimagined.

Lead project artists Josh Graupera and Salina Almanzar have reworked the program with the community's health at the center of their focus. Now, the project will feature virtual learning circles, digital and physical publications, and other opportunities for interaction both virtual and in person with safety protocols strictly followed.

Seed centers BIPOC (black, indigenous and people of color) artists and residents in or from southeast Lancaster city. It opened with a virtual artists' panel on Feb. 11, featuring five BIPOC artists whose work is deeply rooted in community focused place-keeping. In addition, Seed will meet with its numerous partner organizations in the southeast throughout the year to allow emergent needs of the community to be incorporated into its programming.
