September House, a senior center located at 1251 W. King St., York, has announced its schedule of upcoming activities. September House is planning a fundraising night out at Hoss's Steak and Sea House on White Street on Friday, Nov. 8. Gift cards are being sold in advance, and September House will receive a portion of all sales. The gift cards will be ordered no later than Monday, Nov. 4, so they will be available in time to use for the Nov. 8 event. For information, readers may call Marie at the center.
A Veterans Day and Marine Corps birthday celebration will be held on Sunday, Nov. 10, from 1 to 4 p.m. This event is open to the public and will feature guest speakers followed by a free meal. Michael Gurreri of Operation Grandfather 5 and Rich Flickinger will tell stories. The meal will consist of pulled pork, macaroni and cheese, green beans, coleslaw, and homemade desserts. This event is supported by York's Feed the Vets.
From 2 to 5:30 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 31, the center will hold a sock hop/'50s and '60s/pajama/costume party. Food will be potluck, with appetizers/snacks prepared in the morning at September House or desserts brought from home. Attendees are invited to wear costumes.
On Friday, Oct. 25, there will be a meeting from 1 to 2:30 p.m. to continue planning the 2020 cruise. Also on Oct. 25, the movie "The Intern" will be shown from 1 to 3 p.m. Susan will offer sweet treats to enjoy during the movie.
Every Thursday except Oct. 31, ham radio classes for obtaining a technician's license will be offered from 1 to 2 p.m. and for obtaining a general license from 2 to 3 p.m. The free classes are open to enthusiasts of all ages. All radio activities are made possible through an equipment grant from the York County Community Foundation's Embracing Aging Grant program.
On Monday, Oct. 28, from 1 to 3 p.m., the Calendar Craft will continue. Participants are making perpetual calendars out of pre-cut plastic canvas. Registration is requested, and there is a fee to cover the materials.
On Tuesday, Oct. 29, the new Good Eats group will meet from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. This is an open discussion focused on exchanging poor eating habits for better ones, swapping bad foods for nutritionally better options, and sharing tips and tricks for living a healthier lifestyle.
From noon to 1:30 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 1, the Bible study on "Experiencing God" will continue.
Every week, September House offers its regular activities and the opportunity to play games as time allows. Shuffleboard is available on Mondays and Tuesdays from 9 to 11 a.m., and new players are sought. Pinochle is played on Mondays from 1 to 3 p.m., and 500 bid and canasta are played on Wednesdays from 1 to 4 p.m. The bridge club meets every Friday at 10:30 a.m.
Bingo is played on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 12:45 p.m. The first card is free, and everyone is a winner. On Wednesday nights, an all-cash bingo fundraiser is held, with doors opening at 5 p.m. and bingo starting at 6:30 p.m. Readers may call the aforementioned number for more information.
