SFMS Posts Concert, Banjo Workshop

The Susquehanna Folk Music Society (SFMS) will present a concert and banjo workshop with old-time fiddle virtuoso Bruce Molsky and bluegrass banjo innovator Tony Trischka on Sunday, Aug. 29. The events will be held at Fishing Creek Salem United Methodist Church, 402 Valley Road, Goldsboro.

The banjo workshop will be held from 3:30 to 5 p.m., and the concert will begin at 7 p.m. Attendees may bring their instruments and stick around after the workshop or arrive early before the concert to participate in a free, old-time/bluegrass jam from 5 to 6:30 p.m.

Molsky plays Appalachian and old-time music, and his collaborations range from classic old-time fiddling to Andy Irvine's world fusion ensemble Mozaik. He's toured from Appalachia to Australia and garnered two Grammy nominations. Trischka is a founder of progressive bluegrass. Over his long career, he has inspired and supported musicians from banjo innovator Bela Fleck to celebrity Steve Martin.

The workshop will cover the essential elements that make up a "professional" sound on the banjo such as good timing and clarity of notes and tone. Trischka will then talk about Earl Scruggs and his style, how to play the syllables of a song on the banjo, and, if time allows, the melodic style and its basis in scales rather than chords.

Salem Fishing Creek United Methodist Church is large enough to allow social distancing, and it is handicapped-accessible. Those wishing to come early can bring a picnic dinner and listen to the jam session; there are tables in the lobby. People with pandemic-related safety concerns can choose to sit in family units and wear masks if desired.

Separate suggested donations have been set for the workshop and for the concert. To reduce the need for event-goers to congregate, admission donations will be accepted online only and not at the event site.
