The People's Shakespeare Project (TPSP) will welcome back its high school Shakespeare festival, "ShakesPeers!" The event will return in-person on Wednesday, Feb. 23, from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Ware Center, 42 N. Prince St., Lancaster.
Four area high schools will participate in a full day of learning, competing, acting, and sharing. The schools are J.P. McCaskey, Linden Hall, Manheim Township and Lancaster Catholic.
All students will showcase their prepared 1- to 2-minute Shakespeare monologue in the preliminary round of the monologue competition. Afterward, students will participate in a group comedy workshop led by Sena Taskapilliohlu, actress and director. During the workshop, teachers will be invited to participate in an informal discussion of Shakespeare in performance and in the classroom led by Laura Korach Howell, TPSP's executive artistic director.
The afternoon will be spent in small group rehearsals of short Shakespeare scenes to be presented, along with the competition finalists' monologues, at 1:45 p.m. This presentation of scenes and monologues will be held in the Steinman Theatre and is free and open to the public. Awards for best scene and the top three places in the monologue competition will be presented afterward.
