Michael Sheaffer, a seventh-grade student at Our Mother of Perpetual Help School (OMPH School) in Ephrata, placed third in the Junior Division of the Physical Science category in this year's North Museum Science and Engineering Fair. The topic of Michael's project was "Magnetism: The Power of a Gauss Rifle." The physics-based project focused on whether or not the distance of a steel ball shot from a Gauss rifle would increase as the number of Gauss layers - one magnet and two steel balls - increased. The results of the experiment showed that as Gauss layers were added, the distance the exiting ball traveled increased.
Judging for this year's projects took place online, and winners were announced during a live virtual ceremony on March 25. Michael was presented with his award by middle school science teacher Ann DiNovis and OMPH School interim principal Brenda Weaver.
OMPH School offers full-day preschool, full-day kindergarten, and classes for students in grades one through eight. For more information, call 717-738-2414 or visit http://www.omphschool.com.
