Storm Drain Art Project Continues

Aug 24, 2019 - 1:15 pm

In 2018, the Master Watershed Stewards in York formed a partnership with the City of York, the Chesapeake Bay Foundation, the Lower Susquehanna Riverkeeper Association and the Watershed Alliance of York to develop the Street 2 Creek Storm Drain Art Project, a project using street art to raise awareness about stormwater runoff and the negative impacts it can have on local waterways.

This summer, the Second Annual Street 2 Creek Storm Drain Art Contest took place. A panel of judges from the community selected the top six entries. The Master Watershed Stewards also chose two Watershed Steward Choice Awards. The eight winning artists will complete their art at select storm drains in downtown York. Each storm drain will communicate a message, encouraging people to think about where the water flows after it enters the storm drain. The artists were scheduled to begin painting on Aug. 19, weather permitting. The goal is to have the storm drains painted in time for Yorkfest, which will take place on Saturday, Aug. 24, and Sunday, Aug. 25.

The public is invited to the awards ceremony during Yorkfest on Aug. 24 at 1:15 p.m. at the intersection of West Market Street and the York County Heritage Rail Trail. Attendees will be able to meet the artists, the Street 2 Creek group and the judges.
