Fifth-graders in the Elizabethtown Area School District recently attended the district's annual Agricultural and Environmental Science Day, where they took part in hands-on lessons on the contributions of agricultural and environmental sciences to the local community. High school students enrolled in Elizabethtown Area High School's agricultural program hosted the Bear Creek School students at the Elizabethtown Fairgrounds.
The fifth-graders spent the day rotating through various stations developed by the high school students. The stations included dairy science, poultry science, equine science, Pennsylvania wildlife education, swine science, environmental science, agriculture equipment education, aquatics resources, small animal and vet science, and plants, seeds, and soils.
Members of the high school's FFA chapter presented at each learning station, many of which included live animals. Many of the stations also included interactive activities, and each station featured a review game or activity.
The purpose of the event was to introduce elementary students to agricultural and environmental issues at the state and national levels. The learning stations addressed several state academic standards that all students are required to meet before graduation. In addition, the learning station presentations provided a public speaking experience to the high school students.
