Clarion University, Clarion, has announced that 51 percent of its student-athletes achieved Clarion scholar-athlete status, marking the second straight year that more than half the student-athlete population earned the distinction. In all, 174 student-athletes were honored.
To become a Clarion scholar-athlete, student-athletes must have achieved one of several criteria. Students must either earn a cumulative grade point average (GPA) of 3.2 or higher; attain a 3.2 GPA or higher in two consecutive semesters, in the previous year's spring semester, and the current year's fall semester; or, as a freshman or first-year transfer student, achieve a 3.2 GPA in the fall semester.
Among those honored as scholar-athletes are Mount Joy residents Alice Fernald and Hayden Shertzer. Fernald is a freshman on the women's soccer team studying secondary English education with a minor in Spanish. Shertzer is a sophomore on the men's swimming and diving team whose major is nursing.
