Students in Katie Lutz's fifth-grade class recently learn about the power of saying "thank you." The students sent more than 1,100 thank-you cards to a variety of people - from parents, siblings, pastors and coaches to former teachers, hospital staff members, Nick Foles, and Malala Yousafzai - as part of a lesson on gratitude.
Lutz was inspired by a TED Talk by A.J. Jacobs, the author of "Thanks a Thousand," a book about Jacobs' journey to personally thank everyone who made his morning cup of coffee possible.
Lutz's class of 28 set a goal of sending out 1,000 cards. Over four weeks, class members exceeded that goal by mailing or personally delivering 1,150 cards. According to Lutz, the students' motto was "Kindness is courage."
