Students Learn About Healthy Eating

More than 800 Hanover Public School District elementary school students recently learned to eat healthier through the Color Your Heart Healthy placemat coloring contest. The placemats were provided to the schools by the American Heart Association through a sponsorship from UPMC Pinnacle Hanover.

All students in kindergarten through fourth grade in Washington Elementary, Clearview Elementary, and Hanover Street Elementary received the activity placemats, which encouraged students to draw and color a dinner plate with their favorite healthy and colorful foods to represent a heart-healthy, balanced meal. The student who colored the winning placemat from each classroom received a voucher to spend on fruits and vegetables at the local farmers market produce stand, courtesy of UPMC Pinnacle Hanover.

The purpose of the placemats was to encourage healthy eating habits in school and at home, including a diet rich in vegetables, fruits, whole grains, low-fat or non-fat dairy products, and lean proteins, while limiting sugar-sweetened beverages, sugar, sodium, and saturated fat.

The American Heart Association's Kids Heart Challenge activities encourage heart-healthy behavior as students pledge to be more physically active, eat smarter, drink more water, and do a good deed. The program is celebrating the association's 40th year working in schools with new content designed to meet the changing needs of today's youths and educators and help prepare children for success through physical and emotional well-being, all while fundraising for the American Heart Association.
