Students Study Surfactants

On March 18, eighth-grade students at Montgomery School worked with an education outreach team from Croda Inc. on surfactants and sustainability.

The visitors from the specialty chemical company explained the chemistry of surfactants, or surface acting agents, and showed some of their uses. For example, surfactants are added to beauty products and some are used as cleansing and conditioning agents. Surfactants are also added to engines to improve performance and maintenance.

Various career opportunities were discussed, , and students were then engaged in a question-and-answer session. The presentation culminated with a hands-on foam making activity using a surfactant. Students then experimented with different combinations of additives to the soaps to investigate how to change the viscosity.

Montgomery School is an independent, coeducational day school serving prekindergarten through grade eight in Chester Springs. To learn more, readers may visit http://www.montgomeryschool.org.
