Students Win Design Contest

Representatives from the Center for Traffic Safety and State Farm unveiled a new youth traffic safety billboard on July 28 in Lebanon County. The winning design of the "No Excuses Youth Traffic Safety Billboard Design Contest" is a focus on a law stating that it is illegal to drive with ear pods in one's ears.

This design is aimed toward teenagers who may not know of this law. Having ear pods in one's ears while driving hinders the ability to hear oncoming traffic, horns, and sirens of emergency vehicles, and it is considered distracted driving.

The winning designers are Lucy Bickel and Julia Badolato from Eastern Lebanon County High School. The students and their adviser, Taryn Showalter, were on hand at the unveiling to see their design come to life.

Dick Morrett from State Farm presented Eastern Lebanon County High School with the $1,000 award for the students' winning design. Each student also received $100. This contest is fully sponsored by a Community Safety Grant from State Farm.

The selected billboard location on Route 72 was based on crash map statistics gathered from the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation. This area of Lebanon County shows a high incidence of crashes by teenagers. The billboard's goal is to use peer-to-peer education helps in changing behaviors.
