Parks Department Slates Summer Camps

The Lancaster County Department of Parks and Recreation will host a series of summer camps. Unless otherwise noted, registration and fees apply, and programs will take place at the Environmental Center, located in Lancaster County Central Park, 1 Nature's Way, Lancaster. Explore! With Eric Carle for children ages 4 and 5 will be held on Monday, July 8; Wednesday, July 10; and Friday, July 12, from 9 to 11 a.m. Children will listen to readings of several Eric Carle books and then learn about the books' settings and characters, including ocean life, reptiles, and insects.

Dinosaur Discovery for children ages 4 and 5 will be offered on Monday, July 22; Wednesday, July 24; and Friday, July 26, from 9 to 11 a.m. Attendees may play dinosaur games and go on hikes.

Nature Chasers will take place from Monday, July 15, through Friday, July 19, from 9 a.m. to noon. The program is for children ages 6 to 8 who have completed kindergarten. Participants will search for all kinds of critters in the field, forest, and stream.

Best of Summer will be offered from Monday, July 29, through Friday, Aug. 2, with identical sessions available from 9 a.m. to noon and from 12:30 to 3:30 p.m. The program is for children ages 6 to 8 who have completed kindergarten. The camp will focus on classic games and summer camp activities, such as Capture the Flag, freeze tag, fishing, exploring the creek, and hiking. Campers will also take a trip to an entertainment center.

Survival in Central Park for children ages 9 to 11 will take place from July 29 through Aug. 2 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Campers will be outside all week while they learn and practice survival skills, including shelter building, fire starting, campfire cooking, navigation, water purification, basic first aid, finding wild edibles, signaling for help, creating a survival kit, and more.

Adventure Lancaster for children ages 9 to 11 will be held from July 15 through 19 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. The camp will feature different destinations and activities each day. Destinations will include the Lancaster Science Factory, Long's Park, Mill Creek, Lancaster Central Market, and a trampoline park. Additional activities will include fishing at Strasburg Pond, swimming at the pool in Central Park, caving, and indoor climbing.

Ultimate Adventure for youths ages 11 to 13 will be offered from July 8 through 12 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Pavilion 21. Weather permitting, campers will visit a different adventure site daily. Activities will include indoor climbing, kayaking at French Creek State Park, swimming, fishing, creek hiking, using water slides, zip-lining, and archery. Activities will be challenging, and children must be prepared for full days.
