Early registration for the York County Libraries' "Imagine Your Story" SummerQuest program started on May 17 at https://summerquest.yorklibraries.org. This year's program will move entirely online and will feature livestreamed events, on-demand viewing, online challenges, and downloadable activities for children and youths from birth to age 18. It is free to participate with a library card which is available online at no charge.
Performer Steven Courtney will officially get SummerQuest started with a livestreamed concert on Saturday, May 30, at 1 p.m. York's Bubble Lady, Debbie Flaum, will also be featured during this special kickoff event. May 30 will be the first day for participants to log their reading and activity minutes to earn prizes.
Youth services staff have planned a roster of programs for the summer that will include Ryan "The Bugman" Bridge, storytellers Beth Rebert and Lisa Schmittle, Leap into Science, a cryptography workshop, and the Girls Go STEAM program by the Girl Scouts in the Heart of Pennsylvania. Weekly, the program will include new craft projects, digital story times for babies, toddlers, and preschool children, and the new Chapter A Day read aloud program. For the third year running, local Scouts can earn a specially designed badge by reading, hiking, and completing activities starting on May 30. Participants may participate in the Get Outdoors (GO) York! physical activity program which will begin on Wednesday, July 1, at parks across the county.
According to York County Libraries youth services director Paula Gilbert, there will be prizes and incentives for youths for achieving reading and activity goals. Each child participating will need his or her own library card to track individual progress. Parents can request a free card for their children at http://www.yorklibraries.org. They can also register their children for SummerQuest until the last program day on Sunday, Aug. 16. However, Gilbert suggests registering for SummerQuest by the May 30 kickoff so that the children can jump right into the fun, start recording their progress, and get the most from the program.
Each year, local businesses donate prizes to encourage children to keep reading and to stay active over the summer months.
