York County Libraries has announced early registration for its free "Tails & Tales" SummerQuest program as well as an upcoming virtual community information session about the construction happening at the future Kreutz Creek Library.
Registration for SummerQuest will start on Sunday, May 16, at http://www.yorklibraries.org/SummerQuest. The annual summer learning program features online and outdoor programs for children and teens from birth to 18. Participation is free with a library card, which is available at http://www.yorklibraries.org at no charge. Each child needs his or her own library card to track individual progress.
Tuesday, June 1, will be the first day for SummerQuest registrants to log their reading and activity minutes. During SummerQuest, participants can earn a variety of prizes, including one free admission to the York Fair and a ticket to a York Revolution game. Participants will be encouraged to reach 800 minutes to receive all available prizes and incentives for reaching reading and activity goals.
SummerQuest will feature a roster of online library programs, outdoor events, and an opportunity to earn a scout badge. Additionally, participants and their families may hike trails in the program GO York! which this year features 30 hidden posts at parks across York County.
One of the first events of the summer will be the virtual SummerQuest Kickoff on Saturday, June 5, at 10 a.m. It will feature the alpacas from Painted Spring Alpaca Farm in Spring Grove, "Llama, Llama" stories, and more. Other summer programs will include a shark program from the National Aquarium, ZooAmerica, and Digeridoo Down Under.
Activities for teens will include an opportunity to meet Netflix animation supervisor Mike Greenholt on Zoom, a virtual escape room, activities via Discord, and hiking challenges.
The information session about the construction at the future Kreutz Creek Library will be held at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, May 18, on Zoom. It will be led by York County Libraries president Robert F. Lambert and Kreutz Creek Library branch manager Susan Nenstiel. Individuals interested in learning more about the construction project can register to attend the information session at http://www.yorklibraries.org/events. There is no charge to attend.
Kinsley Construction Inc. is overseeing construction at the former Hellam Township building that is being transformed into a library. The new space spans 8,800 square feet and will house books, resources, and activities for children, teens, and adults. The building is over seven times the size of the current library.
Kreutz Creek Library has been serving the community for 42 years in a 1,200-square-foot double-wide FEMA trailer that housed families displaced by Hurricane Agnes in the 1970s. The library anticipates moving to its future location by early fall. Questions about the construction can be addressed during the information session or submitted in advance by visiting http://www.yorklibraries.org and clicking "Contact Us" under "Contact YCL" toward the bottom of the page.
