Readers are invited to take a break from worrying about what is for dinner on Saturday, Nov. 9, and instead attend a spaghetti meal fundraiser at the Hoffman Building at the Solanco Fairgrounds, 172 S. Lime St., Quarryville. Between 5 and 7 p.m., individuals will be treated to spaghetti and sauce, salad, bread, applesauce, and cookies served cafeteria-style.
Diners may opt to find a seat and participate in the Southern End Community Association auction that will run concurrently, or they may take their meals to go. Separate prices for the meal have been set for adults and for children ages 2 to 10 and will be payable at the event.
The proceeds from the spaghetti dinner will benefit the Solanco High School post prom event, which will be held on Saturday, May 16, 2020. The post prom committee, which is composed of the parents and guardians of Solanco seniors, plans to elaborately decorate set areas of the high school to transform it according to a theme that will remain top secret until the event. The committee is also planning games and activities and soliciting donations of prizes to be given away to post prom attendees. A budget of $20,000 has been set for the event.
"We're planning more activities at post prom (than in other years)," said co-chair Sherri Bleacher. "The busier we keep (attendees), the more interested they are in staying."
The goal of post prom is to provide a safe place for students right after prom, Bleacher explained. Traditionally, private afterparties often feature alcohol and other potentially dangerous substances. By providing an exciting post prom, the committee hopes to keep students away from situations where they would be at risk of making decisions that have negative, lasting consequences.
At Solanco, prom is open to seniors and their guests, and post prom will be as well. Students do not need to have attended prom to attend post prom. Admission to post prom is always free of charge.
"That's why we do what we do," said co-chair Kristen Dombach, pointing out why the committee spends time hosting fundraisers in addition to making plans for post prom. The group has hosted a chicken barbecue, a soup and sandwich sale, and a sub sale, and additional fundraisers are in the works following the spaghetti dinner.
Currently, only a small percentage of seniors' parents or guardians are part of the post prom committee, and more are needed.
"There's a job that fits everybody," Bleacher said. "No help is too big or too small. We'll take them all."
Committee meetings will take place in the cafeteria of the high school, 585 Solanco Road, Quarryville, at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesdays, Nov. 5 and Dec. 3; in 2020, the meetings will be held on the first Monday of each month. Parents who would like to be added to the committee's email list may email Dombach at kristendom@epix.net or Bleacher at mcjkids@epix.net.
Members of the community at large may support post prom through financial contributions, in-kind donations, and gifts of items that may be used for prize drawings. Interested readers may email Dombach or Bleacher for more information.
