Supporting Solid Rock

Community support is crucial to the ongoing operation of Solid Rock Youth Ministries, 34 E. State St., Quarryville, which offers free programs for youths in kindergarten through ninth grade who live in southern Lancaster County. A member of Boy Scout Troop 91 recently built a welcome desk for Solid Rock, and a Farm-to-Table Dinner Drive-Through Experience will be held on Friday, Aug. 7.

Scout Andrew Craig, who will be a senior at Solanco High School this fall and then plans to study mechanical engineering in college, took on the construction of the desk as his Eagle Scout project. "I wanted to help an organization that doesn't have access to as many resources as others I have more connections with," Andrew said. "I also wanted a project that involved designing and building things, which I enjoy, and would be a challenge for me. I am super excited with how it turned out."

The desk will be used to check visitors in and out and for administrative tasks. Andrew built the desk in two sections and put both on casters to provide flexibility in location. One section includes a small, locked cabinet and a raised counter for displaying promotional materials while the second section has a desk that will accommodate a seated individual.

"The most challenging part of the project was getting the design of the external panels right," Andrew commented. "The coronavirus panic also came at a time when I was beginning construction, so I wasn't able to involve Scouts other than my brothers, which was a shame."

Andrew's brothers, Daniel, Joseph, and Joshua, assisted with the project. He was coached by his father, Jeff. Scoutmaster Tom Guhl helped to move the completed desk to Solid Rock. Andrew noted that Hearne Hardwoods of Oxford donated all the necessary hardwood, and Oxford Feed and Lumber provided a discount on the high-grade plywood used in the project.

"He did an amazing job," Solid Rock executive director Raeanne Nixon remarked.

The Farm-to-Table Dinner Drive-Through Experience was initially planned as a sit-down meal. However, the format was changed to create a safe environment for community members and Solid Rock supporters, Nixon explained. "I have been amazed to see how God continues to work through uncertain times and how our community has been supportive. We have a lot to celebrate," she noted.

The event will take place at Wesley Church, 1104 Kirkwood Pike, Quarryville, on Aug. 7 at 6 p.m. Meal tickets are required and must be ordered by Friday, July 31, by visiting http://www.solidrockquarryville.com. A discount will be available for purchases of two or more tickets.

Each ticket may be redeemed for a meal of an appetizer, grass-fed roast beef, macaroni and cheese, cucumber salad, corn, a roll, a peach dessert, ice cream, and a beverage. The ingredients will be locally sourced wherever possible.

Attendees are welcome to bring lawn chairs to enjoy their meals picnic-style while listening to live entertainment by the bluegrass gospel band Set Free. There will also be an express lane available for those who wish to take their meals to go.

Sponsorship opportunities are available, and donations of produce for the meal are being accepted.
