Surviving The Storm

MTHS To Hold Graduation Ceremony

When Manheim Township High School (MTHS) graduates more than 450 students at Calvary Church, 1051 Landis Valley Road, Lancaster, on Thursday, June 3, three of the students will be prepared to address family, friends, and fellow classmates, as well as school staff members, on topics based on the theme "The Storm."

Jane Bowen will speak on "The Quiet Before the Storm." Grace Bowman will speak on "The Midst of the Storm," and Brenna Fyfe will complete the theme when she expounds on "The Rainbow After the Storm."

"My speech is about preparing for the storm with the storm as a metaphor for a challenge," said Bowen. "Sometimes you have time to prepare, but other times you are caught off guard," she said, adding that she will recall experiences and events pertinent to the MTHS Class of 2021 and remind her fellow students to not take what they have for granted. In the fall, she will play Division 1 soccer at Fordham University in New York City, where she will major in biology. She said that during her time at MTHS, she has appreciated her fellow students, her teachers, and the learning environment. "There have been so many opportunities. I can't express how grateful I am," she said.

Bowman said that she will focus on who and what gets us through a storm, exploring different ways to persevere and keep hope alive. "I will be looking back to see how we got through previous storms and how to prepare for more storms in the future," she said, adding that she will touch on things she and her classmates missed during the COVID-19 storm, but she will also talk about individual storms. "We have been through a big storm together, but we have our own storms, and we need to recognize that we're not alone in that," she said. Bowman said she is looking forward to going to the University of Pittsburgh to major in biology on a pre-med track in the fall. She noted that she is grateful for the multiple relationships she has created with teachers and peers at MTHS, as well as the awesome academic and extracurricular environment the school creates for students.

In looking at the rainbow following the storm, Fyfe said she will reflect on the wisdom humans can gain from a difficult experience. "It's about looking back on what you've learned and how to move forward after a storm or a challenge in your life," she said, adding that she will focus on using the quiet period to consider how to employ those lessons when encountering the next storm. In the fall, Fyfe will attend Susquehanna University in Selinsgrove to major in creative writing and education. She said that it was the teachers of MTHS who pointed her to the career path she has chosen. "The teachers here showed me what I want to do with my life," she said. "They were the inspiration for moving forward into (education)."
