Wheels And Wings Festival Scheduled

Rotary Club of Lancaster member Stephen Dietrich, one of the organizers of the 2022 Wheels and Wings Festival and 5K, hopes the Coffee Cruise, a new addition to this year's activities, will attract vintage car owners who like to get their cars out on the road. "(The Coffee Cruise) will be held at the same time as the 5K (run)," explained Dietrich, who noted that the cruise will start at 7:30 a.m., following coffee and doughnuts. "It will be really fun," he said, adding that a repair trailer will ride along in case any car develops engine issues. The route for the cruise was created by Michael Rowen of Michael's Motor Cars. There is a discount for those who register prior to the show.

This year's festival, which will be the fifth, will be held at the Lancaster Airport, 500 Airport Road, Lititz, on Saturday, June 25. Day-of registration for the 5K run will start at 6:30 a.m. across the street from the airport at Brethren Village. The event will include two helicopters offering rides for purchase, and a flying rebuilt Huey helicopter from the Vietnam era will be on-site. Activities for children are planned, along with a fly-in, and the "Everything Wheels" car show will be held from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m. A DJ will spin tunes throughout the event, which will be held rain or shine. There will be no charge for spectators to come and enjoy the day. Parking will be provided by suggested donation.

Runners who register for the 5K prior to Friday, June 17, will receive a discount. Medals will be awarded to the top three male and female finishers in six age categories. Those wishing to register prior to race day may visit https://runsignup.com and search for "Lititz."

The car show is open to trucks and motorcycles as well as cars. There is a cost to take part, and both car show and fly-in participants may register at 8 a.m. on the day of the show. Dietrich reported that organizers plan to have trophies for winners in 15 new categories, along with door prizes. Goodie bags will be given to the first drive-in and fly-in participants.

Dietrich noted that the main tent and food trucks will move closer to Fiorentino's restaurant and the terminal and tarmac to be more inclusive of the community airport and the fly-in participants. Food trucks that will be present this year include HotBox BBQ, G's Concessions, TJ's Ice Cream, and Big Dog Craft Brewing. In addition, Fiorentino's will serve special food items on the restaurant's fully remodeled patio.

The event, which was first held in 2017, was not held in 2020. Last year, about 1,200 people attended, but Dietrich hopes to see 1,500 this year. He also hopes to raise the number of vehicles taking part to 400 from last year's 300. Lastly, Dietrich hopes to top the nearly $40,000 the event raised for the United Way of Lancaster Summer Youth Experience, which includes programs carefully selected for their benefits to students at risk for summer slide.
