Author and former missionary David W. Shenk and Jim Eikenberry will lead a four-week series on "Understanding Islam" at Lancaster Church of the Brethren, 1601 Sunset Ave., Lancaster, on Wednesdays, beginning on Jan. 29.
Shenk is a Christian/Muslim consultant for Eastern Mennonite Missions and author of 15 books, including "Christian. Muslim. Friend: Twelve Paths to Real Relationship." For much of his life, Shenk and his family have served as Christian missionaries in Muslim contexts. Eikenberry is a retired Church of the Brethren pastor in Lebanon County who has established a friendship with a local imam.
Dates and topics are as follows: "What Muslims Believe," Jan. 29; "What Muslims Do," Feb. 5; "Anabaptists Engaging Muslims," Feb. 12; and "Personal Interactions With Muslims," Feb. 19.
Shenk will lead the first three sessions, and Eikenberry will lead the fourth. The class will meet in the church chapel from 6:15 to 7:30 p.m., beginning with a time of prayer. The public also is invited to participate in a fellowship meal at 5:15 p.m. Donations for the meal will be accepted.
