When Gina Dissinger held a vendor fair in the basement of Lickity Split during Christmas on Main in New Holland, the response from the public was positive. "It was successful, and the community asked for more," recalled Dissinger.
Dissinger enjoyed giving the public an opportunity to see the historic jail in the basement of what was once Kauffman's Hardware Store, but she also wanted to give back to the community. Several years ago, her son, Justin, had taken part in a musical produced by Cavod Academy of the Arts. "I loved seeing the positive changes in his life (from the experience)," said Dissinger, who later began taking dance lessons from Cavod. "I have been part of Cavod for more than eight years, and I love how they invest in people of all ages, and they inspire them to explore their potential and build confidence," she said.
On Saturday, April 13, Dissinger will help fund Cavod's student scholarship program when she opens Lickity Split Down Under, 209 E. Main St., New Holland, for a Spring Vendor Show from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. All funds raised by the event will benefit Cavod Academy of the Arts, 665 W. Main St., New Holland.
Cavod was founded a number of years ago by Connie Dienner with the vision of raising the standard in godly artistic expression. The organization offers dance, music, gymnastics, acting, and other arts classes with the goal of providing a safe place for students to explore the arts.
Dissinger has lined up a number of vendors to fill the rustic underground space for the day. Vendors selling chocolates, flowers, and jewelry will set up displays, alongside those selling personal items such as soaps and essential oil sprays. Country crafts, hand-painted signs, laser-engraved signs, artwork, and farmhouse decor items will also be on display. Other items that will be offered will include painted beverage glasses, soup mixes for chicken corn noodle and pickle soup, and candles. Dissinger noted that almost all the items that will be available for purchase will have been homemade.
A portion of the sales from the Lickity Split restaurant for April 13 will be donated to the Cavod scholarship program as well. Dissinger hopes the sale will raise $500 for Cavod. A special bake sale fundraiser will also be held to help raise money for a Garden Spot High School trip to Spain in 2020.
Dissinger's experiences at Cavod, which gave her the opportunity to dance again after 25 years, have had a marked influence on her life. "I have been doing tap, ballet, and worship," said Dissinger. "Worship is so much fun. I am inspired. I cry. It's emotional, and it's beautiful." Dissinger mentioned that she had the chance to work with the late Stan Deen when he was director of Cavod Theatre. She had previously worked with Deen when he was the director of Garden Spot Performing Arts.
Dienner is thrilled to have Dissinger's support. "It's absolutely amazing," she said. "We are changing the culture of the arts, bringing glory to our Creator, and we can't do this alone." Dienner expressed her personal gratitude for the effort on the behalf of Cavod. "(We're) so thankful for Gina," she said. "We are a family, and that's what it's all about."
