The Volunteer English Program (VEP) of Chester County is in need of volunteer tutors to provide one-to-one English language lessons to adult learners, as well as share information on understanding American culture.
Prospective tutors are invited to attend a virtual tutor training workshop, which will be held via Zoom on Monday, June 7; Thursday, June 10; and Tuesday, June 15, from 6 to 8 p.m. each evening. Attendees may dress comfortably and feel free to enjoy their own snacks and beverages at home.
Prior teaching experience or fluency in a language other than English is not required to become a tutor. Tutors and students are asked to make a yearlong commitment to the program. Student and tutor pairs meet for three hours a week, and they may split that time that into two 90-minute sessions. Currently, most students and tutors meet virtually, via telephone, smartphone and computer video conferencing, using worksheets sent through the mail. VEP plans to move to in-person tutoring when it is safe.
References are contacted and background checks are conducted before tutors are matched with students. VEP, which serves all of Chester County, currently has a waiting list of students in need of tutors.
A fee will be charged to participate in the upcoming virtual training. Attendees will be asked to pick up a hard-copy tutor training manual at the VEP office, 790 E. Market St., West Chester, prior to the session. Information about pickup dates will be provided after registration.
