James A. Danner VFW Post 537 of Etters has recognized three first responders. Post 537 sought nominations from local fire companies, police, and emergency medical services.
Post 537 has selected Kyle Harbold of Newberry Township Fire Department as the Firefighter of the Year. Harbold serves as the fire police captain, assisting the Newberry Township Police Department in both emergency and non-emergency situations. Of the members of Newberry Township Fire Department, Harbold has responded to the greatest number of calls.
Leslie Garner of Newberry Township's EMS has been selected as Post 537's Emergency Medical Technician of the Year. Garner began as an EMT in 2002, becoming a medic in 2008, and she has served as a full-time medic in Newberry Township since 2013.
The James A. Danner VFW Post 537 has selected Detective Daniel Grimme as the John Radko Police Officer of the Year. The John Radko Award was adopted by the VFW for presentation to an individual police officer for outstanding service in the field of law enforcement.
Grimme, an eight-year veteran of the Newberry Township Police Department, serves in the department's Criminal Support Unit. In the past year he was instrumental in prosecuting several individuals who illegally delivered narcotics. In addition to general investigations, he also investigates domestic violence and sexual assault cases. During his tenure with Newberry Township Police, Grimme has received four Official Commendations from the chief of police, a Medal of Valor, four Meritorious Service Medals, a Life Saving Medal, and two Community Service Medals.
Three primary criteria determine eligibility for these awards. These criteria are recognition by one's colleagues, unswerving loyalty to and active performance in safety of citizens, and dedication to one's official responsibilities over a period of years, showing continuous growth in responsibility and experience.
Post 537 was slated to formally recognize Harbold, Garner, and Grimme at its Safety Awards banquet.
