A performance by the Teen Theater Ensemble from the Yocum Institute for Arts Education kicked off the Summer Reading Program at the Village Library of Morgantown on June 19.
In keeping with the program's theme, "A Universe of Stories," the young actors presented "Aesop's Fables," which included their take on various fables such as "The Boy Who Cried Wolf," "The Lion and the Mouse" and "The Tortoise and the Hare" - each designed to help teach young attendees important life lessons.
The kickoff event also provided youths an opportunity to pick up their summer reading packets, which included a simulated passport and airplane tickets to use for the program. Individuals who are not signed up can still register by picking up a packet at the library's circulation desk.
As part of the program, children and teenagers are asked to note on their tickets when they read for five minutes. When they reach 50 minutes, tickets can be turned in to the library's circulation desk. For each plane ticket turned in, the patron's passport will be stamped, two for each destination. Each destination equals 100 minutes of reading.
"There are 10 destinations. Two tickets of 50 minutes each completes a destination, and we stamp that page for them," explained children's library director Pam Mohl. "If they complete all the destinations, it would be 1,000 (minutes of reading)."
Participants may also earn extra stickers in their passports for each activity they compete. Additionally, for each plane ticket and extra activity they turn in, patrons will receive a ticket for a random drawing for prizes. "If they complete the whole passport, they will get a T-shirt at the end," Mohl noted. "There is also a drawing for an (e-reader) for the younger kids and the teens."
Prizes will also be awarded to those who read for 300, 600 and 1,000 minutes. Prizes include books, small toys and T-shirts.
Passports must be turned in by 2 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 24.
