Virtual CROP Walk Planned

The greater York community will celebrate the 51st annual CROP Hunger Walk as a virtual event on Sunday, Oct. 11, and the preceding week.

People may walk individually or in small groups. Inspired by the words and actions of Jesus in Luke 10, organizers encourage participants to walk in their neighborhoods to remind residents that hunger still exists. Alternatively, churches or organizations can choose to walk in groups of 10 or fewer, observing masking and social distancing guidelines. Instead of a one-day walk on a prescribed route or distance, walkers are encouraged to walk at a time suitable to their needs and safety during the week leading up to Oct. 11.

York is known as the first place to host a walk called a CROP Walk for the Hungry, which occurred in York in 1970. The program continues to support local food pantries through the York County Food Bank, and it supports Church World Service's work to end hunger throughout the world.

Last year, the community celebrated the 50th anniversary of the Greater York Crop Hunger Walk in a walk to the old York County Court House in downtown York. Walking from four hubs in the north, south, east, and west to Center Square, participants gathered for personal reflections, awards, music, dancing, and encouragement to keep working to alleviate hunger and poverty.
