Virtual Heart Walk Slated

This year, the American Heart Association has changed the format of the York Heart Walk. Instead of coming together for a one-day event, participants from across York County can join the Heart Walk by walking wherever they are any time through Wednesday, Sept. 30.

The event is a way to celebrate heart and stroke survivors, encourage physical activity and wellness, and raise funds for the American Heart Association during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Anyone can participate in the Heart Walk. Interested individuals may register as walkers at http://www.heart.org/yorkwalk and ask family and friends to join a team and donate. They are also encouraged to join the "2020 York Heart Walk" event on Facebook for updates and activities. Participants should walk and share their journey any time, anywhere in September and post photos and videos directly to the Facebook event discussion or anywhere on social media using #YorkHeartWalk.

Joe Iandolo, vice president of operations at UPMC Memorial, will chair this year's York Heart Walk.

In addition to walking, other activities to consider are getting the whole family involved and having an indoor dance party; trying out a few strengthening exercises like push-ups, lunges and squats; or creating an at-home circuit workout.

Approximately 120 million Americans have one or more cardiovascular conditions, putting them at higher risk for COVID-19 complications, according to the American Heart Association. Funds raised will help the American Heart Association invest in scientific research to look into the impact that COVID-19 is having on heart and brain health, provide information to those immediately affected by COVID-19, and help health care professionals on the front lines care for patients using the latest guidelines and recommendations. Funds also support the American Heart Association's mission to be a relentless force for a world of longer, healthier lives through investing in research, advocacy, CPR training, and education.
