The Arts at Millersville will present several events in February to launch the spring season. All shows will be held at the Ware Center, 42 N. Prince St., Lancaster. Millersville University requires face coverings for both fully vaccinated and non-vaccinated individuals during indoor events and performances at all on-campus venues and at the Ware Center.
We The People First Friday will present a staged reading, "Under Freedom's Sky," at 6:30 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 4, in Steinman Hall. The multimedia presentation features dramatic readings of authentic stories about Lancaster County's involvement in anti-slavery movements and the Underground Railroad. The stories explore the dangers that African Americans faced as they navigated their passage to freedom, and helped others to do the same, as well as the role of faith and religion in the movement. A discussion will follow the performance. The event is free, with no ticket required.
The reading of "Under Freedom's Sky" will be held in conjunction with an art exhibit, "The Road to Freedom Takes Many Paths," which will open in the Regitz Gallery with a reception from 6 to 8 p.m. on Feb. 4. The exhibit will be on display through Monday, Feb. 28. The exhibit is a combination of photographs, illustrations, and maps, including explanatory text notes that describe Lancaster and southeastern Pennsylvania's African American heritage. The exhibit includes content about the Underground Railroad. Admission is free.
Jaclyn Susa Harnish will perform love songs at Club 42 in a cabaret performance titled "All About Love" on Saturday, Feb. 5, in the Atrium. Doors will open at 7 p.m., followed by the show at 7:30 p.m. Harnish will be joined by a four-piece band and special guest singers Kristen Brewer, Japheal Bondurant, and Joshua Harnish, who will also perform spoken word. Jaclyn will sing a range of music, from Pink to Etta James to Broadway, in this 90-minute program.
A Family Fun Fest, featuring Charlotte Blake Alston's "Stories and Songs in the Oral Traditions," will be held on Saturday, Feb. 12, at 1 p.m. in Steinman Hall. Award-winning master storyteller Alston will share African and African American stories and songs. Lobby activities will be available at noon.
A performance art piece, "Speak to My Soul: A Montage of Voices," will be presented at 2 and 7 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 26, in Steinman Hall. "A Montage of Voices" is a choreo-poem that uses spoken word, song, and dance to voice the stories of the collective black experience in America.
