Water Bath Canning Workshop Set

Aug 08, 2019 - 6:00 pm

Horn Farm Center for Agricultural Education, 4945 Horn Road, York, will present "Intro to Water Bath Canning: Tomato Sauce" on Thursday, Aug. 8, from 6 to 8 p.m.

Attendees will learn the basics of water bath canning in this hands-on workshop, which is one of three different introductory canning workshops offered this season. During these make-and-take sessions, participants will learn how to safely preserve various foods through tested methods of safe water bath canning. On Aug. 8, participants will make tomato sauce during the workshop, and each person will leave with a half-pint of tomato sauce.

Participants will spend time standing, so they should wear comfortable shoes. Closed-toe shoes are preferred. The group will work with hot ingredients, boiling water, and hot end products, so people should wear appropriate clothing to guard against possible splashes and spills. They may also bring an apron to wear if they would like. Anyone who has long hair is asked to wear it tied back or covered. Although not required, participants may bring gloves to wear. All other materials will be provided.

The class will be led by Mary P. Hall of Manchester. Hall grew up surrounded by canning, starting in her great-grandmother's kitchen. Her great-grandmother grew and canned most of the food she served to her family. Although a career in communications and raising her family took Hall away from canning for several years, a desire to be more aware of the food she was eating and to preserve the food grown in her own garden brought her back to exploring methods to preserve food.

There is a fee for the workshop. To register, readers may visit http://www.hornfarmcenter.org and click on Classes. More information is available by calling 717-332-8710 or visiting educationdirector@hornfarmcenter.org.
