Chiques Creek Watershed Alliance, which includes Manheim Borough, Rapho Township, and Penn Township, will host a cleanup event on Saturday, Oct. 17, from 9 to 11 a.m. The cleanup event will take place at the floodplain along Rife Run in Mummau and Logan parks, West High Street (Route 772), Manheim.
The spring 2020 cleanup, registered with Keep Pennsylvania Beautiful, was canceled due to the COVID-19 shutdown. Volunteers are invited to participate in the rescheduled event while working socially distanced, primarily in household groups, and wearing masks out of respect for one another's well-being, where appropriate.
This event is especially recommended for families with children of elementary school age and older. Individuals, Scout troops, church groups, neighbors, and others are also welcome.
Participants should dress for the weather and wear long pants, socks, and closed-toe shoes. Participants should also consider tick repellant. Gloves, water bottles, and snacks are suggested. Trash bags and trash removal will be provided.
Wading in the run or climbing on the banks is discouraged. If there is trash in the stream, there will be designated waders to retrieve it. If an individual would like to be a designated wader, he or she should wear boots and inform the organizer.
Registration is appreciated by calling 717-665-0654 and leaving a name, phone number, expected number in the group, and any questions. Registration will be confirmed by phone.
The event will be held light rain or shine; however, heavy rain or high water will necessitate cancellation. A prerecorded message will be available by 7:30 a.m. at the previously mentioned number. The rain date is Saturday, Oct. 24.
