York College, 441 Country Club Road, York, will host D. Watkins, a Baltimore-based author and editor-at-large for Salon, for a lecture on Thursday, Feb. 6, at 7 p.m. in DeMeester Recital Hall, Wolf Hall.
Watkins will discuss his latest book, "We Speak for Ourselves: A Word From Forgotten Black America." He serves as a writer-in-residence at York College, where he will host a workshop and meet with students, faculty and community members. Watkins' work has been published in numerous publications. He has also authored books including "The Beast Side: Living (and Dying) While Black in America."
Watkins earned a master's degree in education from Johns Hopkins University and a master's degree in creative writing from the University of Baltimore. He is a college lecturer at the University of Baltimore and founder of the BMORE Writers Project and has also been the recipient of awards including the BMe Genius Grant and the Ford's Men of Courage recognition. Watkins was also a finalist for the Hurston Wright Legacy Award and Books for a Better Life.
He has lectured at numerous universities and events around the world. Watkins has been featured as a guest and commentator on NBC's "Meet the Press," CNN's "The Erin Burnett Show," "Democracy Now" and NPR's "Monday Morning," among other shows.
The event is free and open to the public.
