Activities Return To St. Luke's Event
According to Jane Markert, who co-chairs the St. Luke's United Church of Christ (UCC) Spring Thing Bazaar with Amy Adams, there will be lots of changes this year from the 2021 event. The silent auction, themed gift basket stand, and heirloom tomatoes raised by Manheim Central High School students will all be back after a few years' hiatus.
In addition, the event will return to its original date of the first Saturday in May. Spring Thing will be held at the church, 222 N. Broad St., Lititz, on Saturday, May 7, from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. "Everyone is welcome. There's something for everyone," noted Markert.
As in the past, the church will have space in its parking lot for up to 40 yard sale, craft, and home business vendors. Vendors will line the parking lot, with a car parked between each vendor space. Among the vendors will be those selling sea glass items, vinyl print shirts, crocheted items, kitchen towels, and Pampered Chef products.
The themed gift basket stand will feature baskets holding food items such as wine, herbs, gourmet popcorn, vodka sauce, pasta, and more. Sandy Whitson will make a cat lover's basket, and Markert is creating a vintage Boyds Bears basket. Other themes that may be represented include a children's activity basket, a "Pamper Yourself" basket, a movie basket, and a picnic basket. The silent auction, which will feature a variety of donated items, will begin at 7 a.m., and winners will be announced at 2 p.m.
Granny's Attic, known for its selection of donated items, will be open throughout the event. This year, the stand will feature household items, puzzles, small furniture pieces, and clothing for men and women such as shirts, slacks, jackets, and purses. All unsold clothing will go to Ukrainian refugees.
Church pastor James Haun, who is a certified barber, will give haircuts, along with church member Mary Kay Garner, who is a licensed hairdresser. Each year, the two team up to provide cuts and trims by donation during the event. Live music at the bazaar will be provided by Clyde Spangler, who will play his electric guitar. Organizers reported that Spangler is known for playing upbeat Christian music.
"We will have a children's activity table," said Markert, who noted that a dime toss game will be on-site as well.
Food items served during the day will include breakfast sandwiches on croissants and later hot dogs, along with hot and cold beverages. "Barbara Garner's bakery will be here," said Markert. Chicken barbecue dinners, which will include a half-chicken, a baked potato with butter, and applesauce, will be available. Tickets for the barbecue meal may be purchased in advance at the church office and at the event until sold out. Readers who have questions about the tickets or the bazaar may call the office at 717-626-7100. The Spring Thing Cafe will give visitors a place to sit and eat. Pretzels for the event will be provided by Lititz Mayor Tim Snyder, and chips will be provided by Diffenbach's.
A percentage of the funds raised by the Spring Thing will be donated to TNT Youth Ministry in Ephrata.
