Tanya Russ, a resident of the Heritage of Green Hills, received a $1,000 check from executive director Doug Walther as a reward for winning the Heritage of Green Hills writing contest. Russ' short story, "Boots and Boats," is about the aftermath of the capsizing of a small boat in the Caribbean.
Pat Kostenbader and Paul Laincz, fellow residents at the healthy life plan community in Shillington, wrote stories that earned honorable mentions in a field of more than 12 entrants.
The pieces were limited in length to two pages but could be in any style and could be nonfiction or fiction.
The contest's judging panel included two professors and one student from Reading Area Community College and several readers from the Heritage of Green Hills' owner, Lapis Advisors. Lapis proposed and sponsored the contest as a way to keep residents' spirits up in this uncertain time.
