World War II Roundtable To Meet

The Central Pennsylvania World War II Roundtable will meet on Thursday, Feb. 6, at 7 p.m. at Grace United Methodist Church, 433 E. Main St., Hummelstown. Author and historian Ken Weiler will be the guest speaker.

On June 6, 1944, the Allies made a successful landing on the beaches of Normandy and began their advance through Europe that culminated in Germany's surrender. According to Weiler, there is more to that story, one in which the Russian Red Army played a vital role.

Weiler is a former staff sergeant in the United States Army with the Department of Engineering and Military Science at Fort Belvoir. His topic will be the subject of his book, "Why Normandy Was Won: Operation Bagration and the War in the East 1941-1945." Weiler will discuss how the Allies' successful invasion of Europe was due in large part to the manpower and resources Germany expended on the Eastern Front fighting the Russians.

Weiler has authored three books and numerous articles on World War II subjects. He is also a trustee of the Eisenhower Society in Gettysburg and a volunteer curator at Gettysburg's Eisenhower National Historic Site. He holds degrees from George Mason University in Fairfax, Va., and the University of Virginia in Charlottesville, Va. Weiler currently resides with his wife in Hanover.

The Central Pennsylvania World War II Roundtable is a nonprofit organization that provides a forum for World War II veterans, authors, historians, and citizens to share their knowledge and experiences related to the war. Meetings are held on the first Thursday of every month. Anyone with an interest in World War II is invited to attend. There are no membership or admission fees.
