YCLC Seeks Volunteers

Apr 06, 2019 - 10:30 am

The York County Literacy Council (YCLC) has students, both English as a Second Language (ESL) pupils and native-born adults, who need a volunteer tutor to work with them as they study. Tutors may help their student to study for their High School Equivalency test or to reach a literacy goal such as being able to read to their children.

Volunteer tutors do not need a background in education to help someone to accomplish their literacy goals. Training will be offered at Hanover office of York County Literacy Council, Guthrie Memorial Library, 2 Library Place, Hanover. Training will be held from 10:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on Saturdays, April 6 and 13. Participants must attend both training dates.

After completing the training, volunteers will meet with their student once per week for one and a half to two hours in a public location arranged by YCLC. YCLC coordinators will help with selection of materials and lesson planning throughout the tutoring experience.

Requirements to be a tutor are a high school diploma or equivalent, sensitivity, patience, reliability, and attendance at the training course, pending a preliminary interview. To register for the training, readers may contact 717-845-8719 or volunteers@yorkliteracy.org. For additional information or for a complete training schedule, readers may contact Rita at cr.mgr@yorkliteracy.org or visit http://www.yorkliteracy.org.
