YCSWA Plans Programs, Tours

The York County Solid Waste Authority (YCSWA) is offering virtual and in-person facility tours and environmental education programs. All in-person facility tours are being provided with added COVID-19 safety measures to protect visitors. All tour participants must wear a mask, and the group size is limited to 25 participants to ensure proper social distancing.

Tours are available at the York County Resource Recovery Center and the Hopewell Area Recreation Complex (HARC) for individuals and groups. Participants learn how York County trash is converted to electricity while being reduced in volume by 90% to create a much smaller amount of ash. HARC facility tours highlight how the YCSWA turned a now-closed landfill into 200 acres of space that hosts a wildlife habitat and recreation complex.

Environmental education program activities are offered on the topics "Vermicomposting," or composting with worms; "Recycled Paper Revelations"; and "The Magic of Waste-to-Energy." These free programs focus on the importance of being responsible with trash and the need for recycling. They also educate those in attendance on how the YCSWA manages waste for York County.
