The Hempfield Area Democratic Committee (HADC) has named Katie Yoder of East Petersburg as the eighth annual recipient of its Paul and Jan Wright Senior Scholarship.
The award, given to a graduating high school senior in the Hempfield School District, recognizes a student who, according to the committee, best represents the next generation of Democratic leaders. The HADC scholarship is named for Paul and Jan Wright, two longtime, active HADC members and residents of East Hempfield Township.
The daughter of Julie and Dwight Yoder of East Petersburg, Katie is a senior at Hempfield High School. During her high school career, she swam for the Hempfield swim team, Five Star Swim Club in Lititz and Landisville summer swim team. She served as the vice president of Hempfield Young Democrats and president of Varsity Club, and she was a co-founder of Sisterhood. She was also an active member of Hempfield Mini-THON and the National Honor Society.
Outside of school, Katie has volunteered for various activities sponsored by the Hempfield and Lancaster Democratic committees. After graduating from high school, Katie plans to attend Bridgewater College in Virginia where she will major in political science/pre-law and Spanish.
Katie will receive $500 to put toward her college expenses. She will be recognized at an upcoming HADC meeting.
