Youths Earn Eagle Rank

At the beginning of 2020, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints ended its affiliation with the Boy Scouts of America (BSA) and replaced the BSA Eagle Scout Program with the Children and Youth Program. Prior to the deadline, young men in the local area received their Eagle Scout rank from the BSA and The Church of Jesus Christ.

Six Scouts earned the rank of Eagle Scout in the Elizabethtown Ward. The young men and their projects are True Herbert, 18, son of Derrick and Ellen Herbert of Willow Street, who organized maintenance projects to help renovate low-income properties and provide bags of food and toiletry items to the residents who live there; Colin Meldrum, 16, son of Kent and Alyson Meldrum of Lancaster, who planned, organized, and carried out the planting of over 300 trees and shrubs in Drumore Township Park; Coleman McBride, 17, son of Adam and Brenda McBride of Elizabethtown, who organized donations of colorful socks that were donated to the Clare House Women's Shelter in honor of a young woman who had been killed in a car accident while serving a mission for her church; Miles Bushey, 13, son of Eddie and Leah Bushey of Hallam, who organized the refinishing of benches and picnic tables in Glen Rock Park by removing the old paint and then repainting them; Nathan Gubbins, 15, son of Marissa and John Gubbins of Elizabethtown, who constructed a brick pathway from the entrance of the Vesta-Musselman Iron Furnace Center to the parking area; and Trent McBride, 15, son of Adam and Brenda McBride of Elizabethtown, who coordinated the preparation of over 2,000 mailers promoting an educational night that would benefit Elizabethtown Communities That Care and managed assistance for the event.

Four young men in the Ephrata Ward earned the rank of Eagle Scout. They are Dylan Parsons, 17, son of Matthew and Diane Parsons of East Lampeter, who landscaped and renovated Lancaster Country Day Elementary School's gardens; Ryan Parsons, 16, son of Matthew and Diane Parsons of East Lampeter; who renovated Lancaster Country Day School's courtyard; Kibson Elmore, 18, son of Simon and Amy Elmore of Denver Borough, who cleaned up the garden around the flagpole at Denver Elementary School and created a garden of Pennsylvania native plants for the fourth grade; and Payson Elmore, 18, son of Simon and Amy Elmore of Denver Borough, who organized a group of volunteers to create over 100 superhero capes for the Children's Ministries at Water Street Mission.

Two Scouts earned the rank of Eagle Scout in the Lancaster Ward. They are Kyle Turner, 16, son of Ruth and Kevin Turner of West Lampeter Township, who coordinated and oversaw the installation of over 100 water sewer cap plates in East Lampeter Township, and Michael De La Parra Gurr, 16, son of Mauricio and Lani De La Parra of Lancaster, who directed volunteers in the production of 200 hand-tied polar fleece blankets, which were donated them to the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC) of Lititz for the care of its patients.

In the Lititz Ward, two Scouts achieved the rank of Eagle Scout. They are Daniel Dryden, 16, son of John and Laura Dryden of Lititz, who collected emergency donations for foster children served by Bethany Christian Services, and Daniel Eckman, 15, son of Virginia Eckman of Lititz, who organized a group of volunteers and cleared a trail at Muddy Run Park in Holtwood.
