The New Cumberland Town Band has announced its 73rd season of concerts. Founded originally in 1946, the band was a natural outgrowth of the needs of military musicians all over the country who, returning home from duty overseas, were interested in continuing their playing experience and reliving the camaraderie of military musical ensembles.
Originally called the American Legion Post 143 Band, the New Cumberland Town Band changed its name in the early 1950s. It became an independent organization and has continued to provide concerts for the public since that time. Today its members come from all walks of life from teachers to students, from business people to professional musicians, and from teenagers to older adults. They all share the goal to provide good music and enjoyment for themselves and for their audiences.
The concert dates, times, and locations are as follows: Memorial Day, Monday, May 27, at 11 a.m. at Bridge Street and Park Avenue in New Cumberland; Sunday, June 16, at 6 p.m. at New Cumberland Borough Park; Thursday, July 4, at 10:30 a.m., annual Fourth of July concert at New Cumberland Library; Sunday, July 14, at 7 p.m. at Eberly's Mill Church of God (rain date of Sunday, Aug. 4); Sunday, July 28, at 6:30 p.m. at New Cumberland Anna and Bailey Street Park; Sunday, Aug. 11, at 6 p.m., on the lawn at St. Theresa Church (rain date of Sunday, Aug. 25); Sunday, Sept. 8, at 3 p.m. at Cumberland Crossroads in Carlisle; Saturday, Sept. 28, at 11 a.m., Apple Festival at New Cumberland Borough Park; and Friday, Dec. 13, at 7:30 p.m., annual Christmas concert at Trinity United Methodist Church.
