Big Band Will Perform

The Arts at Millersville will present "King Street Big Band: Basie and Sinatra at The Sands" on Saturday, Nov. 16, at 7:30 p.m. at The Ware Center, 42. N. Prince St., Lancaster. The big band will play the sounds of Count Basie, including selections from the "Sinatra at The Sands" album featuring Lancaster crooner Tuck Ryan.

Founded and directed by Dr. Kate Umble Smucker, King Street Big Band (KSBB) was inspired by Smucker's time playing with The New Jazz Order Big Band in Kansas City. As an ensemble, KSBB, born in 2014, seeks to promote and preserve the classic big band repertoire while also forging ahead with new directions and possibilities.

Smucker is a trumpet player and music educator from Lancaster now based in New York City. She currently plays with Calliope Brass Quintet, teaches at The Grace Church School and maintains an active freelance career. Working with Calliope Brass, Smucker assisted in the development of the educational show "What's Your Story?" She is a founding member of Spark Brass, a brass and percussion ensemble dedicated to promoting music education. Smucker holds a doctorate in trumpet performance from the University of Missouri in Kansas City, a Master of Music from the University of North Texas, and a Bachelor of Music Education and a bachelor's degree in trumpet performance from the University of Northern Colorado.

Ryan is a singer, piano player and recent graduate of Millersville University, based in Lancaster. He currently fronts his own band as well as sings and plays keyboards for AMFM: Andy Mowatt's Frequency Movement and Mangoso. Ryan has released a full length album, "Warmest Blue," as well as two EPs available on all streaming services. AMFM recently released its self-titled debut album.
