Storytellers who enjoy telling tall tales and shaggy dog stories are invited to apply to participate in the Liars (Tall Tales) Contest at the Susquehanna Folk Festival, which will take place at Roundtop Mountain Resort, 925 Roundtop Road, Lewisberry.
The Liars Contest has been set for Sunday, July 28, from 3 to 4:30 p.m. and will feature 10 storytellers competing for cash prizes in front of a panel of judges. Each storyteller will be given up to seven minutes to tell a humorous, family-friendly tall tale and will be judged on the originality of their story and how well they engage the audience. Cash prizes will be presented for first- through third-place winners.
The Liars Contest is a juried competition, and only invited contestants will be allowed to participate.
The master of ceremonies will be storyteller Bil Lepp, five-time champion of the West Virginia Liars Contest. Growing up in a family where the truth was fluid, Lepp became adept at spinning tales and exaggerating circumstances at an early age. Though he is a champion liar, his stories contain morsels of truth which shed light on universal themes.
The second annual Susquehanna Folk Festival will take place from Friday, July 26, to Sunday, July 28. The family-friendly festival will feature performances by acts from the local and regional areas and beyond, along with dancing, workshops, jam sessions, an artisan marketplace, food, and hands-on activities. Headlining acts will include BeauSoliel with Michael Doucet, Cherish the Ladies, Hot Club of Cowtown, Kittel & Co. with John Doyle, Pride of New York, and Dom Flemons. Radio personality Ian Zolitor will be the master of ceremonies. Tickets and information are available at http://www.susquehannafolkfestival.org.
