Summertrios, an immersive chamber music camp for adult instrumentalists of all levels, is offering several weeks of programs at Franklin & Marshall College in Lancaster. Adult non- and pre-professional string, wind, and piano chamber musicians may participate in any or all of the programs, which are designed to inspire and transform their musical journey.
During the course of each program, participants receive coaching from the distinguished faculty performers/teachers, attend daily workshops, perform a final concert, and have ample opportunity for sight-reading sessions. Each program includes music to play and hear, coaching from the professional performers and teachers, meals eaten together in a campus dining room, and more.
Adults are welcome to attend Summertrios, and there are no admission criteria. Participants should be comfortable reading music for their instrument and playing in a chamber music ensemble. The Summertrios program works with novice through advanced players who are placed in appropriate level groups.
The first program, ProAm Week, began on June 1 and will continue through Saturday, June 8.
The second program, Ensemble Week, will take place from June 8 to Saturday, June 15. Participants will survey a wide breadth of repertoire with faculty members and have opportunities to perform in a final concert. For those who have less experience or simply do not desire to play for an audience, the program will offer a supportive, informative workshop setting.
The third program is Improv Across Music, which is new this year. Two improvisation workshops, set for June 8 to Wednesday, June 12, and for June 8 to 15, will be led by renowned bassist and composer Mark Helias. Helias will tailor the sessions to best meet the needs of each musician in a collaborative, fluid, and participatory setting. Participants will discover their personal musical vocabulary in the context of individual and ensemble performance and will explore basic tenets of improvisation. Wind and string instrumentalists, pianists, composers, and percussionists of all levels and musical backgrounds are invited.
The fourth program will be an Intensive Week from Sunday, June 16, to Sunday, June 23. Musicians will work in-depth on their repertoire choices on a program designed for instrumentalists who are motivated to learn a musical work in detail.
Each Summertrios program has a separate tuition cost. Attendees may choose to stay on campus for an additional fee or to commute. A small number of scholarships are available. Auditors are also welcome.
Additionally, faculty concerts will be held at 8 p.m. at Barshinger Hall on the college campus on Wednesdays, June 5, 12, and 19, and Tuesday, June 18. The concerts are free and open to the public.
