TAFE Offers Online Programs, Shows

Theatre Arts for Everyone (TAFE) has re-envisioned its 2020 season in an ongoing effort to continue its tradition of live community theater. After producing one in-person show this year prior to the pandemic shutdown, TAFE reimagined what its performances would look like during the COVID-19 pandemic.

TAFE postponed its original 2020 season to 2021 and moved programs online. The new line-up includes original plays adapted for online platforms.

At the outset of the pandemic shutdown in March, TAFE leveraged its volunteers and staff and began developing free theater arts programming online. Offerings ranged from playwriting courses to play reading and discussion groups to themed game nights. To give people more opportunities for connection and creativity while in isolation, TAFE developed even more content. Board member, local educator, director and playwright Paige Hoke wrote TAFE's first original virtual show, "An Isolated Incident."

To cater to the unique platform of virtual theater, Hoke and Diane Crews, TAFE's artistic director, plan to write a total of four original shows to round out the 2020 online season. The first online show, "An Isolated Incident," opened on Aug. 21 and runs through Thursday, Sept. 10.

In addition to TAFE's regular season, it is also partnering with Weary Arts Group in a series of one-act plays written by award-winning playwright, poet, and changemaker Idris Goodwin. These plays are meant to spark multigenerational conversation about race in America. Performances will be free online. Information on shows can be found at http://www.tafepa.org.
